In 2009, Black Saturday was when Bushfires caused widespread devastation in Victoria Australia and 173 people lost their lives, and many were injured. When black Friday started appearing here there was much confusion...

The Marketing departments here seem to have forgotten 2009, and obviously more interested in sales than lives and the environment.

Another banger, Brett. I am not sure how I feel now knowing Philadelphia's (my hometown's) place in the BF mythology. 😅

This is the third article I've read this morning, and all seem to be following a theme that's been top of mind for me: how much decision-making power we cede to corporations, global elites, and the professional managerial class that facilitate their dominance. The other two were an op-ed by Anand Giridharadas about the Epstein Class, and one by fellow substacker Evelyn Quartz on shopping at Safeway.

Oh and love the shout out to the OG, Althusser. He features prominently in my work on school abolition.
